Sankey Bridges

Sankey Bridges is located in the north-west region of England. It is sited precisely along the turnpike road dividing Prescot and Liverpool. It is often referred to as  ‘cardinal Warrington’s Holy Trinity Parish’. Its history is truly an interesting one as it was founded in 1757. It was formed during the era of the famous industrial Revolution. It was primarily built so that coals can be evenly distributed to industries in need of them. Thus, with the advent of the Bridges, growth and developments were subsequently felt by other small villages in the region such as St. Helens and Widnes.

However, in the mid-fifties, the canal was used for conveying raw sugar from Liverpool to Earlestown for Sankey Sugar works. However, due to the reduction in sugar demands around 1958,the canal was subsequently closed down in 1963.

Ordinarily, the Sankey Bridges should be under the management and control of the ‘Canal and River Trust’, entrusted with managing Britain’s canals but sadly, this is not the reality on ground. Thus, as a result of missing from the general protection afforded by the Canal and River Trust it has affected the environment, businesses and local communities negatively.

Sankey Bridges aside being a meeting point for several industries also serves as a good spot for relaxation. This is all thanks to the popular and characterful Fery Tavern that has been in existence since 1762, it is located on the idyllic part of the town and ever ready to mesmerize one’s taste buds with their signature meals.

Sankey Bridges railway station is another landmark worthy of mention that further  brought  the district  and its environs  to the limelight of industrialization. It was  located west of the Sankey canal and south side of Old Liverpool Road. It was functional from 1864 until it was closed in 1949.
