Old Hall

Old Hall is a three storey building, built centuries ago which imports elements of the medieval or Jacobean era. It is located in Sankey Valley Park, Warrington.

The Old Hall served as home to the various Lords of Warrington between the thirteenth and Seventeenth century. Old Hall was built by Sir William Fitz Almeric, Lord of Warrington, after his original house was razed down by fire. Though the exact date of the fire incident was not recorded, it is believed to be somewhat around 1256 and 1259AD.

To commence building the hall, Botele sought and obtained lands from his Lord, Earl in 1260. The original hall was a one-storey wooden hall but was replaced in the 16th century with a brick building.

The old Hall was later passed to Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester who later sold same to Thomas Ireland, a lawyer. It was subsequently passed to Richard Atherton who in the eighteenth century, added an extra building to the main building. It was subsequently inherited by the Lilford family in 1797 through marriage. The Lilfords after inheriting Atherton Hall felt one property was enough. So, after splurging huge money on the old hall and experiencing failure in selling the same, it was thus demolished in 1824.

After reconstruction of the hall by the designer, W. G Habeshon, Lady Lilford voiced her displeasure with the property and it was demolished in 1940s save for a part of the West Wing.

After the Old Hall was brought to ruins by tenants in charge, the Warrington Development Corporation acquired it in 1974.

Old Hall upon being a ‘victim’ of arson attack lost its roof and consequently, Warrington Development Corporation reconstructed the property into multiple apartments. This move was however campaigned against by the local residents who felt commercializing the structure will make the building lose its value as a repository of Warrington’s history.
