Latchford is an electoral ward and district in Warrington, Cheshire. It is within Warrington’s south-east town center and houses about 7,856 residents according to the 2001 UK census. As a suburb, Latchford is mainly a residential area; it lies between the Manchester Ship Canal and Mersey and majorly comprises ancient terraced housing styles and open spaces. The ship canal is crossed via a swing bridge and unused Latchford railway.
Originally, Latchford was a town in Grappenhall’s old parish around Cheshire. Also, it was part of Bucklow Hundred and near the Lancashire border. Between 1974 and 1894, Latchford part was placed in the Warrington County Borough, and even in the Lancashire county registration, while the rest of Latchford assumed a civil parish called “Latchford Without,” which was transferred to Lancashire. Interestingly, following the 1974 local government reforms, Latchford was handed over back to Cheshire.
Latchford was selected as the area for the intermediate lock on the canal of Manchester Ship. It consists of a higher ocean vessel lock and a lesser lock for its south coasters, barges, and tugs. Ship mooring places were offered on the south bank of the canal, and they ensured that two big vessels passed each other even during this period. They are still using the locks, though less often because ships hardly go to terminal docks at Salford and Manchester.
Latchford Railway Viaduct
In Latchford, the Latchford viaduct was launched in 1893 to convey the NorthWest and London Railway Stockport over the Manchester Ship canal through the Warrington line. Canal. The railway conveyed the last passenger in 1962; however, it carried on to carry freights. Later, it was closed to every traffic in 1985, after it was considered too costly to do extensive repairs for operations
Finally, it is vital to add that the popular communal facilities in Latchford are Victoria Park and Black Bear Park.
