Great Sankey

Great Sankey, a suburb of Warrington, is a village located about 2 miles west of  Warrington centre. Before it attained its distinct Civil parish statue in 1866, it was a Chapel under Prescot parish. It was subsequently moved to Cheshire in 1974. The Sankey Bridge was quite instrumental in the industrial growth experienced by Great Sankey district as prior to its construction, it was a rural area. With the emergence of the 20th century, it was transformed to a residential area which brought about the building of RAF Burtonwood in 1939.

Great Sankey as part of the United Kingdom Parliament, representing the Constituency of Warrington South is made up of three council wards. The wards are occupied by councilors from the Labour Party.

As regards Religion, Great Sankey has only Church of England in its district, though under Liverpool’s diocese. However, Penketh, Great Sankey’s nearest neighbour, has both Roman Catholic Church (St. Joseph) and Methodist Church in the region.

According to figures published by the 2001 census, the district of Great Sankey is made up of 16,960 residents. Females account for 50.5% of the population while males account for 49.5%. 98.05% of the population are of white racial origin, mixed origin make up 0.55% while Black and Asian racial origin make up 0.15% and 0.75% respectively.

Great Sankey and Penketh make up the highbrow districts of Warrington. Its being sited in between Manchester and Liverpool is quite advantageous as it aids in speeding up its urbanization.

Just like Penketh, it has two major Secondary schools: Great Sankey High School and Barrow Hall College. However, it has over seven primary schools. Some of them are : St James, Barrow Hall, St Phillips, Old Hall, St.Joseph..Its major means of transportation is through railway or road.
