This is a big village in Warrington, Cheshire, and is 10 kilometers (6 miles) northeast from the town center of Warrington; it’s the main settlement in Glazebury and Culcheth civil parish.
Culcheth is basically residential, having a huge village green in which they hold the yearly Community Day.
You can find the village marked as “Celchyth” of “Calchuth” on Saxon maps that show South Lancashire. On these early deeds and maps, they also wrote the name as “Kilshaw,” “Kylchith,” and “Kilcheth.” It’s gotten from the British language “coed” and “cil,”‘retreat in a wood,’ ‘black wood,’ or ‘at the edge of a wood.’ Today, they’ve got a couple of examples of this name like the Welsh call it “Caldicot”, Wales is “Cil-y-coed,” and likely “Culgaith”, “Cumbria”. This name’s initial element is likely also cul, which means ‘narrow.’ Nevertheless, the name is also believed to be of Norman origin, but every 4 families of French descent that stayed in this area have names like “de Holcroft” , “de Risley” , “de Kenyon” , and “de Culcheth”.
This area is believed to have been created before or during the Norman conquest era, as it was stated in the Domesday Book. Later, Culcheth Hall was owned by the Withingtib family till it was demolished after WWII.
Glazebury and Culcheth Parish Council functions as one of the Warrington Borough Council that covers the matters that have been delegated by the borough to the parish councils in Warrington. After the local elections in 2016, Glazebury and Culcheth Parish Council comprised six Labour councilors and four Conservatives.
In Cheshire Constabulary, they’ve established a police community base in the South Centre of Culcheth agreeing to the local scout group. With this innovation, local police officers get to spend more community time and create an easier way for people to reach out to them. If this arrangement didn’t happen, police officers would need to stay at Warrington Police Station, which is several kilometers away from the area.
